Before reaching Coeur d'Alene, Buddy, Joe, and Gary stopped in Butte so that Buddy and Joe could switch places as driver and passenger due to fatigue (after all, Buddy had been driving the entire time after Flagstaff). So Joe compensated for the lost contact lens by placing one of the lenses from his glasses in the eye without the contact lens). He looked hilarious, like he was sneering at all the other drivers.
Just before crossing the Idaho border, Buddy and Joe looked behind their car and there was no Gary (not that that was the only time they looked back, but it's a long story and no one is really to blame for this). After debating over what they should do, Joe finally pulled over to wait about 5 minutes. There was still no Gary.
They decided it would be best to continue towards Coeur d'Alene where they would check in with everyone in Spokane and leave a message for Gary, informing him that everything was going okay and they would proceed towards Spokane.
They ate lunch at Denny's, where the phone was, and evidently Gary was in Missoula, about one hour behind them searching for them. When word got back to him, he caught up with Buddy and Joe in Spokane.
